#BlackmenDreamLDN
19 July 2016 | Buster Mantis, London
Francesca Altamura, Tamar Clarke-Brown and Thandi Mbire (HBM: Hot Black Males) invited five London-based male artists and cultural figures - including musician GAIKA (2016 Afropunk Festival London Headliner); musician Shabaka Hutchings (The Comet is Coming, Sons of Kemet, and Shabaka and the Ancestors); visual and net-artist Isaac Kariuki; poet and producer James Massiah; and visual artist Irvin Pascal - to provide a voice for black masculinity in 2016. The event comprised a screening of #BlackmenDream by Philadelphia-based artist and MFA Yale candidate Shikeith, followed by an informal panel discussion and DJ set by Coby Sey (NTS/Tate). The film hashtag was extended both URL and IRL - #BlackmendreamLDN @BmdLDN - asking panelists and audience members to reflect on their own experiences as black, male, or other. The speakers discussed intersectionality, fetishization, masc. V. femme, support structures and everyday obstacles, to ultimately envision and strategize new potentials for the future. The discussion was live-tweeted over the duration of the event.
The transcript was recently published as a digital zine, illustrated with selected images from IGGYLDN's acclaimed series BBDC (Black Boys Don't Cry) and a unique playlist from Coby Sey (Whities/NTS).
